I wouldn't call myself "obese", but I'm definitely heavier than I would like to be. Until I can manage to topple the weight-loss thing, I would like to try and look the best I can until then.
I hear certain colors, particularly darker/duller colors are good. Any particular "look" I should try an aim for? I'm pretty much all about my Converse shoes, jeans, and long-sleeve shirts with the sleeves pushed up. Is that "okay" for a heavier guy, or would a different style suit me more?
Now haircuts; my weakness. I have naturally red hair, which tends to look more "brownish" when it's longer, and more "blonde-ish" when short. I have *no* idea what would look good. I have pretty coarse hair, if that makes a difference. I'm complete open, be it long hair, or short hair. I'm not much for "medium hair", but I'll definitely keep an open mind.
And finally, beard style. What kind of sideburns, goatee, or beard would look good, or with what kind of haircut?
Post pics if you can. Thanks in advance!

I'd go with a buzz cut and short beard. It'll hide the extra heaviness of your face and the short hair looks better on a large guy.

#1 Clothing -- Yes, dark clothes (blacks, dark browns, navy are slimming. You can wear the jeans and converse shoes - with shirts, I would try shirts that have a rib/band around the bottom - that way they are not billowing out making you look heavy. (the type of band that is around the bottom of sweatshirts). #2 - Haircut - If your hair is coarse, I would try to keep it on the shorter side-coarse hair has a tendency to become unmanagable the longer it gets. I would get a shorter cut with the sides combed back over the ears and the top how you are comfortable with it or how your hairdresser recommends. Sometimes longer hair makes the face look rounder and heavier, so I would go with the short keeping it neat and tidy with a good cut. #3 Beard Style -- I would stay away from sideburns, but a goatee is always stylish if kept trimmed and neat. With a short haircut and the goatee, it would work....I've seen guys with long hair and a goatee and it just doesn't cut it.

My bf is a heavy guy as well. He usually looks good when he's more dressed up more casual and neater. A nice pair of jeans and a button up, long sleeved shirt with vertical lines (makes you look slimmer) is a simple outfit that can make you look good. Converses are good, they almost go with anything you wear. And it's the dark colors that look better on him because darker colors give you a slimming illusion. And for the hair, I think heavier people look better when they have shorter hair. Longer hair only makes it worse.

the hair cut part is a bit hard to answer because I would need to see the shape of your head and face.
But as far as your clothes go you sound like your doing alright. I would wear a boot cut or relaxed fit jean. Nothing skinny. For shirts button ups always look nice on a guy short or long sleeve and vertical stripes are slimming. Completely avoid horizontal stripes! They are a no no! Darker colors are slimming but don't be afraid to rock white or lighter blues. Avoid vivid colors such as yellow.
hope that helps

Here's some clothes ideas:

Layering is your friend. Look for longer coats (they end near your hands when your hands are straight against your sides). These button down shirts are really flattering, especially if you leave them unbuttoned with a darker teeshirt underneath. If you have a stomach, tucking in your shirts is a bad idea, as is having shirts that are too short. You want your shirts to cover your stomach (even when you lift up your arms). When you wear a button down shirt open, with a shirt underneath, you create a very slim silouette. If you button up the shirt, make sure that all the buttons are laying flat - you don't want them to pull.
You are right in darker colors being slimmer. You can bring this concept into your jeans as well. Indigo or even black jeans will look wonderful. Just make sure that they fit. Unfortunately cargo pants aren't the best look on bigger guys, they add freaky bulges to legs and hips - it's not good.
It sounds like you are doing good with clothes already, the above are just different ideas.
With your hair, you might want to keep it buzzed fairly close to your head. You want to look well groomed. If your hair is not curly, consider the first picture on this site http://www.haircutsformen.org/buzz/pages... That would look really sharp if you're not into buzzing it. Even with your red hair it would look good. Long hair is really hard to pull off (unless you're in an 80s hair band...or a metal band).
You can use your facial hair to your advantage. If you have it done right, you can create a solid jawline and slim your face. Just avoid that goatee thing...those aren't flattering.
Sideburns are ok, just keep things trim...
It's really hard to give further advice without seeing a picture, or knowing how old you are (like if you're under 23, then skip the facial hair...)
